Looking after your new bed

Congratulations on your new bed! Now you’ve maximised your chances of a wonderfully relaxing sleep every night, it makes sense to look after your mattress so you’ll enjoy the benefits it will bring you for years to come.

When you unpack your mattress, don’t be alarmed if it has a chemical odour at first. This is perfectly normal, non-hazardous and will disappear within a short period of time.

It’s normal in the first few weeks to notice that your mattress isn’t completely flat. This is as a result of the fillings gradually settling under your body weight and shape – but don’t worry, they will even out over time as the mattress settles.

Make sure you follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when it comes to rotating or turning your mattress. Some are specially designed not to be turned at all; others need to be rotated weekly to start with to speed up the settling process. If your double bed comprises two zip and link mattresses, don’t forget to separate them before turning or rotating.

It’s a good idea to air your bed at least once a week. Turning down the duvet or bedding for a few hours allows more air to circulate through the mattress. Brushing the mattress to remove fluff and dust is also worthwhile – but don’t be tempted to vacuum it as this is not good for the filling.

Don’t ever be tempted to roll or fold your mattress if you need to move or store it elsewhere, even for a short period. A bed mattress is specifically designed to always lie flat – any other position could permanently damage its careful construction. (This doesn’t apply to sofa bed or adjustable bed mattresses.)

Finally, no matter how much fun it might be, don’t allow children (or adults!) to jump on your bed. This isn’t good for the mattress or the bed base. It’s much better and safer to buy a trampoline!

Your guide to choosing a new bed

Buying a bed is not a process that should be taken lightly or done in haste. Given how long you spend in a bed, and the importance of sleep to your wellbeing, you will probably want to spend as much as you can afford and make the right choice for you. There is a bewildering array of options and technologies that will claim to give you the best night’s sleep often at the cheapest price. Research is vital if you are determined to avoid being bamboozled by marketing gimmicks or a hard sell approach. That’s why we’ve set out some of the basic facts you need to know before you go shopping for your new bed.

Bed and mattress technology has come a long way in recent years. Taking into account a whole host of factors from temperature to asthma to weight to movement, you can now choose a bed that provides optimum comfort for you (and your partner).

We all know how great we feel when we’ve had a good night’s sleep; that’s why it is so important to take time to choose a bed that suits you perfectly. But before you get out your wallet, make sure you read through our guide.

Make sure you measure up

Before you go bed shopping, check how large a bed you can comfortably fit into your bedroom – and don’t forget to allow space for bedside tables and for wardrobe doors or drawers alongside to open easily. The table below shows the Sleepeezee bed sizes.

The metric equivalents of these sizes are just that – equivalents, not exact measurements.

The metric sizes are:

Single – 90 × 190cm, Double – 135cm x 190cm, King – 150cm x 200cm, Super King – 180cm x 200cm.

When making the decision on size, also consider / ensure that the bed will go into the room by checking that all widths and depths are less than the entry dimensions.

Top tip – if it was easy to get your existing furniture in, then compare the measurements with the model you want to replace it with.

Make sure you measure the width and height of all doorways, hallways and stairways, including banisters and turns. Don’t forget to consider obstacles such as radiators, wall and ceiling lights.

What’s your type?

As well as an amazing array of bedframe styles from wrought iron to polished wood, there are other types of bed you might like to consider too…

A divan bed is a popular choice of bed base – and you can choose from sprung top (with either open coil or pocket springs in the base), a platform top (which is firmer), or a comfort platform top (a luxury version of a platform top). The comfort of each type can be adjusted to suit by combining the divan with different mattresses. The style of the bed can also be customized with your choice of headboard to fit in with your decor.

A storage bed is an alternative type of divan that includes either drawers or a lidded option giving you full access to the space underneath the mattress. This type of bed is an excellent choice if you’re short of bedroom space.

For the ultimate in comfort – and to make getting in and out of bed a whole lot easier – why not take a look at an adjustable bed? These beds have an electrically powered adjustment mechanism, which makes it easy to move the bed into different positions.

Try before you buy

Buying a bed really should be practical experience. You’re going to spend a lot of hours in your new bed so, to find the best match for you, it’s important to try as many different types of beds as you can. Bed shops are very used to customers taking off their shoes and coat and lying down for a few minutes – in fact they actively encourage it. Let’s face it – the only way to know if you’ll find a bed comfortable is to see for yourself. Just relax, adopt your normal sleep position, and see how it feels….

Mattress, base or both

If your current bed base is quite old, it is advisable to buy a new mattress and base together as this is the best way to ensure the most comfortable fit with your needs. But if you do want to buy just a mattress or only a base, make sure you measure up properly as dimensions can vary. A mismatch is bound to be uncomfortable!

Soft versus firm

Your mattress needs to be just right. Too soft and you’ll sink in and the lack of support will cause aches and pains. Too firm and you may find you start to experience discomfort on pressure points such as your hips or shoulders. Just lie down and see how easy it is to relax comfortably. The right mattress will support your spine correctly whilst still molding to the natural curves of your body.

Happy couples

If you share your bed, choose the biggest you can, bearing in mind that a standard 4’6” double allows less space per person than a single. You should also take height into account too (your bed should really be at least 10 – 15 cm longer than you are). Whatever you choose, make sure it suits both of you – which means you’ll both have to go shopping and try out the beds together….

Allergy alert

For those of us who suffer from allergies or respiratory problems such as asthma, good quality latex or foam mattress, or one that has a hypo-allergenic filling, are all wise choices. To vary the degrees of firmness achieved, talk to your bed retailer about the different effects achieved with different types of bed base.

Spring into action

There are two main types of springs, ‘open coil’ and ‘pocket spring’. Open coil springs are typically hour-glass shaped springs which are wired together in rows. Because they are attached, the springs have a tendency to move as one unit, so for couples, both are likely to disturb the other when they move in the night. It is generally recognised that a pocket sprung mattress avoids this problem. This is because it contains individual springs, each within paper or fabric ‘pockets’, which work independently of each other. This type of mattress is generally considered to provide the best level of support and encourage good posture; it’s also a good choice if one partner moves a lot in their sleep as it stops them from disturbing the other. The number of the pocket springs in a bed is certainly directly related to the cost of the bed, but not necessarily to the comfort and support. The best way to determine this is by trying the bed in store. Whether open coil or pocket sprung – the firmness depends on the gauge or thickness of the wires of the springs.

Don’t forget memory foam

If you could look inside a memory foam mattress you’d discover millions of microscopic cells that react to heat and pressure. Memory foam is also inherently resistant to dust mites which are ideally suited to those who are susceptible or sensitive to allergies. Memory foam can also be called Visco Elastic. Some types of memory foam are affected by room temperature (and make the mattress feel cool at first).

Shop around

Once you know what sort of bed and mattress you’re looking for, it pays to shop around the various retailers as many offer a price match or hold frequent ‘sales’ where you can bag a bargain. If you are buying online, still make sure you’ve been into some shops first to actually try out the beds on offer. And before you buy, check what’s included in the price – is the headboard or mattress extra for example?

Delivery dilemmas

Beds are not always ready made and waiting to be delivered so be prepared to wait a few weeks until yours arrives. When it does, you’ll need to know if it is delivered ready assembled, or if you need to plan to assemble it at home. Finally, make sure you have made arrangements for your old bed. Some retailers will take it away when they deliver your new one but you’ll need to check if this is an option first – and if there is a charge to do so. Alternatively, your local council may be able to recycle your wooden bed, or you could donate it to a furniture re-use network.

Accessories

When you buy your new mattress or new bed, don’t forget to also invest in a good quality mattress protector. The cotton-faced ones are the best option as they help to protect your bed linen and your mattress from unsightly stains.
